Medicine women, known as tinesmegelen, diagnose by touch and treat their patients--mostly women and children--with leaves, bark, and roots from trees associated with ancestral spirits. In addition to healing, they relate oral traditions, offer marital counseling, protect patients against potential domestic violence, and practice divination.
By earning the trust of nearly twenty medicine women over the course of her fieldwork, Rasmussen is able to provide an in-depth profile of these healers and their beliefs. The women come from diverse backgrounds, many of noble origins. Whereas they must be mothers, most do not practice their profession fully until their post-childbearing years. Rasmussen traces the mythical-historical origins of female herbalism and the initiation process for entering the profession. Significantly, she investigates the powerful relationships between medicine women and various authorities: Islamic leaders, state officials, and the medical staff of nongovernment clinics. Rasmussen draws the reader into this fascinating world of medicine women through interviews, guided conversations, life histories, illustrative case studies, and, most importantly, the words of the healers and their patients. As a participant-observer, she shares her own experiences with descriptions of the treatments she herself received. I’ve never read a book by this author before, but she knocked it out of the park! Thanks so much for thinking of us readers who are left with book hangovers and just need the next book in the series. I just downloaded the next one. I don’t normally write reviews but this author needs to be out there so everyone can find her. Great book, excellent characters and pacing. Wonderful storyline.

pleasantly surprised!

So, I’ve been on the Find Me (WITSEC) book train and trying to find a book to hold me over until the second book comes out and omg now I’m going to have to do the same for THIS book!
I was drawn in from the beginning. The characters, the multi POV (which is one thing WITSEC lacks), the world building! Excellent! I love a good grovel and I think these guys are headed that way now! I can’t wait to see where the next book takes these characters!
Now….what do I do while I wait?

Tip Top Read

Marvelous debut by first time author to me. The story sounds similar to many others, but is written extremely well with enough bite to give it a fresh feel. Told from different POVS, our heroine survives a traumatic event, moves to a more secure location with her mum, and begins to live. She is daring, brave and most of all, true to herself. But then......you have to get the book to find out what happens next!!!!!!

So I really enjoyed the story. It’s unbelievable in some of the torture revelations on things that did happen and things that didn’t happen.
The character development was decent. Having a little more background on the MMCs would have been nice but for what it was it’s fine. I just didn’t connect with them as much as I wanted to.
Lots of typos and misplaced words in the kindle version.
I’ll probably read the next one. I was glad the cliff hanger was not so startling that I felt I had to dive into the next book immediately. I could stop here and be fine with not knowing what happens next. Just assuming she got away.

Unexpectedly original for a mafia book. I thought I read them all but I loved Emmy's personality. I liked her toughness and that she didn't give into the three hassholes, Ares, Hades and Vulc. Emmy and her mom were on the run for over a year when they found refuge with The Pantheon. Her mom reconnects with an old HS friend and while Emmy tries to keep to herself. Ares, Hades, and Vulc notice how different Emmy is from the girls they're used to and instantly want to get to know her and protect. But Emmy and her mom have more secrets then the boys knew and protecting her becomes a full time job. Will they get any benefits from being her bodyguards? High heat with a good storyline. Triggers of kidnapping and abuse.
