Verdun: The Longest Battle of the Great WarAt seven o'clock in the morning on February 21, 1916, the ground in northern France began to shake. At seven o'clock in the morning on February 21, 1916, the ground in northern France began to shake. For the next ten hours, twelve hundred German guns showered shells on a salient in French lines. The massive weight of explosives collapsed dugouts, obliterated trenches, severed communication wires, and drove men mad. As the barrage lifted, German troops moved forward, darting from shell crater to shell crater. The battle of Verdun had begun.

In Verdun, historian Paul Jankowski provides the definitive account of the iconic battle of World War I. A leading expert on the French past, Jankowski combines the best of traditional military history-its emphasis on leaders, plans, technology, and the contingency of combat-with the newer social and cultural approach, stressing the soldier's experience, the institutional structures of the military, and the impact of war on national memory. Unusually, this book draws on deep research in French and German archives; this mastery of sources in both languages gives Verdun unprecedented authority and scope. In many ways, Jankowski writes, the battle represents a conundrum. It has an almost unique status among the battles of the Great War; and yet, he argues, it was not decisive, sparked no political changes, and was not even the bloodiest episode of the conflict. It is said that Verdun made France, he writes; but the question should be, What did France make of Verdun? Over time, it proved to be the last great victory of French arms, standing on their own. And, for France and Germany, the battle would symbolize the terror of industrialized warfare, "a technocratic Moloch devouring its children," where no advance or retreat was possible, yet national resources poured in ceaselessly, perpetuating slaughter indefinitely.

Hybrid polo shirt -- very comfortable
This seems to be a kind of "go anywhere, do anything" shirt that almost succeeds on every count. The fabric is quite thin and very stretchy--the same kind of fabric as a lightweight workout shirt. Definitely not a pique knit polo, or even a sturdy t-shirt knit. The collar is fabric, not ribbed. The quality of construction seems good. The fit is generous. I'm 6'1", 185 lbs, 33" waist and 42R jacket, and this shirt I'm wearing is a Medium. It's still quite loose all over. Could've even perhaps gone with a Small, certainly with this amount of stretch in the material, and it still wouldn't have hugged the body. This shirt design is most comfortable on me with only the top button undone. It can be worn with the top button done up (see pic) but the collar does tend to fold a bit when you wear it like that. The collar fabric isn't quite firm enough to hold its shape. Two buttons undone (see the other pic) is also an option, and that makes for a pretty wide collar. The shirt body is definitely long enough to wear tucked in for the golf course or office, but not so long (on me, at least) that it can't be left untucked for less formal occasions. And it must be a "luxury" shirt because the tape on the outside of the plastic box says so!

Excellent value, not too short
My husband is 5'11" and 200 pounds and typically wears a Large or X-Large (leaning more toward X-Large for waist, upper arms, and length). Based on the size chart, we got this in 2XL, and it fits perfectly. He has a long torso and likes to tuck in this style shirt, so length is often an issue, but not with this shirt. It is just the right length. It fits well around his chest, waist, and arms, too - just the right amount of looseness without looking sloppy. The fabric is not cotton; it is that sport material. It's just okay. We got the black, and it is like a heathered black or a super dark heathered gray. It almost looks like it has little metallic flecks in the photos, but in person, it doesn't look that way. Don't worry about it being flashy! He would never usually wear a 2XL, so I would say these run small and to size up 1-2 from your usual size. Most of all, though, follow the provided size chart.
