NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Epic and debate-shifting." --David Brooks, New York Times"More than any book published so far in this century, it deserves to be called a conservative classic." --Yuval Levin, National Review With his trademark blend of political history, social science, economics, and pop culture, two-time NYT bestselling author, syndicated columnist, National Review senior editor, and American Enterprise Institute fellow Jonah Goldberg makes the timely case that America and other democracies are in peril as they lose the will to defend the values and institutions that sustain freedom and prosperity. Instead we are surrendering to populism, nationalism and other forms of tribalism. Only once in the last 250,000 years have humans stumbled upon a way to lift ourselves out of the endless cycle of poverty, hunger, and war that defines most of history--in 18th century England when we accidentally discovered the miracle of liberal democratic capitalism. As Americans we are doubly blessed that those radical ideas were written into the Constitution, laying the groundwork for our uniquely prosperous society:
- Our rights come from God not from the government.
- The government belongs to us; we do not belong to the government.
- The individual is sovereign. We are all captains of our own souls.
- The fruits of our labors belong to us. In the last few decades, these political virtues have been turned into vices. As we are increasingly taught to view our traditions as a system of oppression, exploitation and "white privilege," the principles of liberty and the rule of law are under attack from left and right. At a moment when authoritarianism, tribalism, identity politics, nationalism, and cults of personality are rotting our democracy from within, Goldberg exposes the West's suicidal tendencies on both sides of the ideological aisle. For the West to survive, we must renew our sense of gratitude for what our civilization has given us and rediscover the ideals that led us out of the bloody muck of the past - or back to the muck we will go. Suicide is painless, liberty takes work.

Great basic dog bed
Size: 20.0"L x 20.0"W x 6.0''TH, Style: Round, Pattern Name: Bed
We really needed additional places for my dog to rest, besides hanging out on the furniture. He gets to be a little jerky and presumptuous, thinking he owns the joint when he lies all over the bed and couches. So the extra dog beds were necessary additions to the house. He took to this one right away. Sure, he still will try to sneak onto the human bed, the couch, the chair - especially when food is involved in the picture. But he does like this bed. The only real negative I have is that it's whitish on top. It shows dirt kind of easily and time will tell how well it will stand to multiple washings. It's soft. It's cushy. It looks pretty descent for a dog bed. He can curl up in it nicely and relax. Basically it does what it should and he seems relatively happy to hang out on it. Now, if Amazon could make a dog bed that could actually train the dog - that would be incredible!

Better than beds I've spent double the money on!
Size: 20.0"L x 20.0"W x 6.0''TH, Style: Round, Pattern Name: Bed
This bed is actually amazing for the price. My chihuahua digs a hole through every bed he's ever had except this one. The bottom actually went flat before he was able to dig a hole into the fabric. But since its such a great bed, i cut open the bottom and restuffed it from the filling from an old pillow and stitched it back up so he can keep enjoying it. Abd if he eventually does dig a hole in it, ill be rebuying this same bed.

My cat used it right away!
Size: 20.0"L x 20.0"W x 6.0''TH, Style: Round, Pattern Name: Bed
My large long-hair orange cat is a bed hoarder. He has at least 5 or 6 beds around the house, and uses every one of them (at different times, of course). But lately he's started sleeping on my pillow during the day, but going to bed at night on a pillow covered in his long orange hair wasn't cutting it for me. So I purchased one more bed for him - because heaven help me if I should move one of his other beds. What we won't do for our babies! Anyway, I put this new bed near my pillow and he's been using the bed instead of my pillow. It's soft and the bolsters are thick and it's just the right size for him to curl up in! He loves it! Win-win!

Lopsided, but works
Size: 20.0"L x 20.0"W x 6.0''TH, Style: Round, Pattern Name: Bed
It's soft and good cat size. The bottom stuffing is uneven, so it leans a lot, no matter how I rotate it for the cat to try to even it out.
But the old cat loves it, especially since it's positioned in a perfect spot; a "corner" by a hallway, so it feels safe, while letting the cat see everything from that out of the way vantage point. I've been trying to get him to use beds again (had to throw some out b/c he gets seizures which can result in loss of bladder control). It only took a few days for him to "discover" the new bed, and start adding it to his nap rotations. and he looks so cute in it.
