Ibn Khaldun: The Birth Of History And The Past Of The Third World

A sympathetic yet incisive study of the great North African polymath

Ibn Khaldun, the most celebrated thinker of the Muslim Middle Ages, is the subject of this intriguing study. Lacoste opens with a general description of the Maghreb in the later Middle Ages, focusing primarily on mercantile trade, especially in gold, and the social and economic structures of tribal life. He unravels Khaldun's fascinating biography-born of an aristocratic family in Tunis in 1332, he had an extraordinary diplomatic and military career in the turbulent wars and politics of Western Islam in the fourteenth century; withdrew to a desert retreat in 1375, and finally emigrated to Egypt.
Lacoste then turns his attention to Ibn Khaldun's majestic Universal History, arguably the greatest single synthesis produced by medieval thought anywhere. His account of Ibn Khaldun's thought is a remarkable, sympathetic work of recovery, not only uncovering its basic categories but exploring its contemporary relevance to an understanding of the Arab world.
Thinkers as diverse as Ernest Gellner and Arnold Toynbee have paid tribute to the lasting fertility of Ibn Khaldun's work. English-speaking readers now have an opportunity to appreciate some of the richness and diversity of the Arab intellectual heritage.

Good quality for an inexpensive salt/pepper grinder. Works fine and should last a reasonable time

Looks nice and seems to work well, but the black retaining ring randomly fell out.

The pepper grinder looks nice and initially functioned well as expected. However, as at least 9 other reviewers have noted experiencing, within 2 weeks of purchase and after very minimal usage, the black retaining ring around the grinder cone & adjustment knob just fell out when I was using the grinder, which was disappointing and indicative of poor design or construction for this part. After some research & experimentation, I was able to pop the ring back into place using needle-nose pliers (you just need something hard and narrow to push and flex the ring a bit, not necessarily pliers). I'm hoping that this is not a harbinger of other problems to come. Otherwise it's a nice grinder.

Not Overly Large and Easy to Use
Color: Silver1, Color: Silver1
I’ve been looking for a salt grinder for a long time. I was hoping to find something small—closer to the disposable grinders you see at the grocery store—but those don’t really seem to be available. So I decided to try this one, and overall I’m glad I did. I’ve included photos to give a better sense of the size compared to your store size non-refillable salt grinders, since it’s a bit larger than what I originally had in mind. The grinder works smoothly and doesn’t require much effort to use. You can easily adjust the grind size by turning the knob on the top of the grinder, which is a nice feature. Refilling it was also straightforward. I had no trouble pouring in coarse Himalayan salt from a larger container without making a mess.

Salt or pepper grinder.

Excellent product. I accidentally broke one of mine and was pleased that I was able to purchase one grinder. They’re beautiful and very well made. Grind salt and pepper easily and many different coarseness. And they are pretty.

Inexpensive but certainly not 'cheap'

These work well and feel like very good quality far in excess of what you might expect for the price. I am very happy with my purchase.
