A rare and captivating piece of history. This antique gold ring is set with a genuine Roman amethyst intaglio, intricately carved with a mythological scene; we believe most likely Herakles. Created by highly skilled artisans during the Roman period the figure is depicted nude beside a column, holding a vessel and a long tool or weapon over one shoulder. 

The intaglio dates to the Roman Empire and would have originally served as a personal seal. Its later gold setting, probably 18th or 19th century, was crafted to showcase the ancient gem in a wearable, timeless form. The setting is created entirely from high carat gold and echos the style of the roman era. The band itself has a pleasing rounded profile which is tactile on the hand. The buttery yellow hue complementing the lilac stone within.

HALLMARKING: unhallmarked high carat gold

CONDITION: the ring is in lovely antique condition which fine patina and few nibbles  across the surface of the intaglio especially the top left. The edge is slightly and subtly nibbled but secure in the setting.
