Overview

There have been many articles and even books written on what happened after General Motors closed its plant in Janesville, Wisconsin in 2008 after some 90 years of operation.

Here, for the first time, former Wisconsin state senator—and Janesville native—Tim Cullen tells the inside story of how and why it happened, and what it means for the future not only of Janesville, but cities across America.

Cullen, who co-chaired the governor’s task force that tried to save the Janesville plant, provides a sweeping history of the plant from its boom years to the abyss, while noting the struggles African Americans and women faced in getting hired and treated fairly. Along the way he finds some heroes, including an early African American GM employee; a woman who insisted on gender equity in the plant; and Walter Reuther, the legendary labor leader.

Perhaps no one is better qualified than Tim Cullen to tell this important story. Tim worked in the Janesville GM plant as a college student and he was there, decades on, when presidential candidate Barack Obama told a hopeful gathering of GM employees and other stakeholders he would do what he could to ensure its success.

Less than a year later, the plant closed. In “Disassembled,” Tim Cullen reveals what happened.

REVIEWS

“Fascinating and insightful commentary on the complicated relationship between GM and Janesville, WI over 85 years. Cullen examines their interactions, their influences on one another, and how this partnership reflects 20th Century America. While reading, I felt a roller coaster of emotions. I was surprised, conflicted, angered, inspired, and ultimately hopeful for what we, as everyday citizens, can accomplish in the face of adversity. This book presents reflections of the past, relevance for the present, and encouragement for the future.”

—Patricia Thom, retired professor from UW Rock County and daughter of Doris Thom, whose story is a significant part of this book

sizing runs a bit big but very comfortable, i love these and ordered multiple colors
Size: X-Small, Color: Black
Initially, i ordered a small and an X small based on reviews here. Glad i did. I opened the x-small first and it fit perfectly. Returned the other one unopened. Sleeves fit my arms well. Collar stands up well. Shirt has sufficient length to tuck in too. Not super long though if you want to untuck with jeans. I'm 5'6 140#. I lift weights regularly and run. I'm right at 11.8-12.0% body fat. I typically wear a small in the amazon essentials slim fit t shirt. Those fit really well in size S. Check them out too if you have not yet. These polos XS fits equally well for my body type.

Great Shirt - Fits big and isn’t slim IMO
Size: X-Small, Color: Black, Size: X-Small, Color: Black
5’10, 155lbs, size X-Small. Soft material, very comfortable, light weight and breathable. Sizing is way off. This shirt is huge considering my size, shirt size, and slim fit.

Lightweight and soft
Size: Large, Color: Bright Blue
True to size and very comfortable. Lightweight and the color is just as the picture. They was well and don’t wrinkle easily. We dry them on low heat to avoid shrinkage and so far they have been just fine.

Great Slim-Fit Polo That Keeps You Cool on the Course
Size: Medium, Color: Dark Green, Size: Medium, Color: Dark Green
I picked up this Amazon Essentials Slim-Fit Golf Polo recently, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite golf shirts. The quick-dry fabric really works — even on hot, sunny days, I stay comfortable and dry without feeling sticky. The slim fit is flattering without being too tight, and there’s enough stretch to move freely during my swing. It’s lightweight but still feels durable, and the collar keeps its shape after multiple wears and washes. For the price, it’s hard to beat a polo that looks good, feels great, and performs well on the course. Definitely recommend if you want something simple and functional.
