Spelers bewegen door een open spelwereld, op zoek naar al evenmin omschreven 'voorraden', die ze nodig hebben om te overleven. Op basis van diezelfde voorraden kunnen spelers wapens maken om zich te verdedigen tegen het groeiende aantal infected.

Het spel kent een dag- en nachtcyclus. Overdag is het relatief veilig en kunnen spelers op zoek naar voorraden. 's Nachts zijn de infected veel actiever en is het raadzaam om beschutting te zoeken. De game is de eerste samenwerking tussen Warner en Techland. De studio is vooral bekend van de Call of Juarez-games, die het maakte voor Ubisoft, en de Dead Island-games, die het afleverde voor Deep Silver. Ook in de Dead Island-games vecht de speler tegen geïnfecteerde tegenstanders.
