Recorded away from their residential Manchester in a remote and isolated location, Patterns – made up of Ciaran McAuley (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Alex Hillhouse (bass/samplers), Jamie Lynch (drums) and Laurence Radford (guitar/samplers) – emerge out of the darkness with this, their brilliant shimmering debut single on Melodic.

Both ‘Induction’ and ‘Throwing Stones’ echo their rural hideout’s open terrain and almost cinematic space, evoking a setting where time becomes irrelevant, cast aside as the man made creation it is, and days become lost in quiet reflection, a melancholic tinge affecting the tracks as a result. Patterns’ lead singer Ciaran McAuley paints a more abstract picture, “we wanted to evoke the kind of woozy hynotic space you get when you’re somewhere between sleeping and being awake,” he explains, “the weird mix of memories and visions you get when you’re disassociated from your body.”

Written “about being young and trying to create your place in the world,” what strikes one about the songs wash of pop-infused psychedelic shoegaze is how they, like seminal contemporaries Deerhunter and Panda Bear, look to those initial walls of dissonance made influential by the likes of Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine, but then soften the edges. Experimenting with electronics and more hushed reverb and delay, they seek to create something otherworldly, yet all the while pushing their vocals forward enough to provide a real emotional core.

Regards their influences, McAuley admits a debt to the aforementioned 80s innovators but stresses, “we’ve never wanted to be a rock band in the same way that those guys were. We want to make music that’s somewhere in between drone and pop, almost like it’s stretched in two different directions.” Indeed, of equal importance to the patchwork that makes up Patterns sound is the spatial electronica and glitch of Flying Lotus and the Brainfeeder roster, while McAuley also talks enthusiastically of Gold Panda’s warped pop.

“It’s definitely influenced us,” he states, “we’re against this whole idea of four musicians going into a studio and letting someone straightforwardly record us playing. Once we’ve recorded what we need to we go right back to the bedroom and mess with everything. I use Ableton live, an SP 404 sampler, a Microkorg XL and a whole load of plug-ins to create music this way – basically how an electronic artist would.”

Mixing this with more tangential names and ideas, such as the surrealist cinema of Luis Bunuel, the philosophy of Jacques Derrida and the writings of Franz Kafka and Milan Kundera, it’s clear that the group have a sound that works across a myriad of different levels.

At a time when most new bands are shouting loudly, desperately in your face for attention at every turn, Patterns’ rise to prominence is a refreshing recall to the days when new music and sounds were discovered as a result of meandering exploration, when gems were stumbled upon live, hiding away in metropolitan backwaters or isolated rural territories. In the four-piece’s case they were “found” last year in the basement venue of a Mancunian suburb, curating their own monthly shows – having only formed some weeks previously – their sincere, wistful dream-pop drifting up and out of the stairwell, illuminating their surroundings, painting its maudlin Autumnal streets in soft-glow Technicolor. Truly though, their real induction starts now.

Amazing. The Perfect Pillow for Side Sleepers with neck pain!
Size: Queen (High Loft), Number of Items: 1
I do have to update my experience. This still is a very comfortable pillow, it's just I can't sleep with it under my head (it's now my hug pillow). After using for 2 weeks, I developed severe neck spasms. Pillows are very individulized and as it turns out, I probably need a firmer pillow than this "highly" comfortable pillow can offer. Will NOT change my rating. Wow! I'm impressed with this pillow so far. I'm a side sleeper mostly but chose the medium-high loft 6.2" as recommended which was the perfect height. I didn't see any taller options but this has turned out just right. I did hours of research before chosing this product, which turned out to be advantageous. It's not as cooling as my old memory foam pillow with the gel layer but it stays cool long enough that I don't have to move the pillow around to be comfortable before falling asleep. It's surprising lightweight. I like it much more than any memory foam I've ever had. The best news was that within a few days my headaches and neck pain have improved by 80%. I am really very impressed with the quality of this pillow. It is softer than I anticipated but still firm enough to keep my head elevated giving me perfect spine alignment and great support. It truly is the MOST COMFORTABLE supportive Pillow I have ever slept on! The smell is only minor at It's worst and has nearly disappeared after just 4 days. It is a mild latex smell but definitely NOT petroleum. It's in the moderate price range at ~$100 and worth every cent. High value for the price. I really really like this pillow and highly recommend it. Big fan! Might irder a 2nd as a backup if it doesn't last but it's so well made I feel that won't be a problem.

The pillow is of very good quality—it is worth every penny spent. It is soft, and my daughter sleeps very comfortably.

The pillow feels premium from the first night and delivers soft and stable support. The pillow holds its shape and didn't have any chemical smell out of box. Worth the price and I would buy it again.

Not really medium, but a quality pillow nonetheless
Size: Standard (Mid Loft), Number of Items: 1
It is absolutely the case that with this type of product, most people who review it don't actually know what they're talking about. Latex foam pillows are not like any other kind of pillow, so your expectations have to be completely different. It's not about thickness, height, or anything else but comfort. Comfort in this case comes from you choosing the correct level of FIRMNESS. Since each company has their own idea of what constitutes each level, the difficulty is figuring out which one is going to work for you. Your spine - including your neck, should not be anything but straight/aligned when your head sinks in. Regardless of what the pillow LOOKS like, it is how your head lays that matters. Latex foam is not like memory foam AT ALL, so don't expect it to be. LF bounces back immediately when you move off of it, and it can last for a very, very long time with proper care. Yes, it does have a natural, rubber odor. This fades a bit with time, but will never go away. After all, it IS a rubber product. EXPECT A SCENT! To keep yourself from being bothered, and to extend the life of the pillow, use TWO different types of pillow covers. As a first layer, I use one meant for encasement from allergens and bugs. It's waterproof (not vinyl, and not loud). It's the kind that cannot go in the dryer after being washed. The second layer is a simple cotton cover/case that you should wash and dry depending on factors like oil production, frequency in hair washing, and frequency in sheet changing, etc. Using both will dramatically extend the life of the pillow. Water is the enemy. Moisture will cause the foam to break down into pieces. The crumbling is pretty nasty, so avoid it! The case this one comes in is admittedly cheap and pathetic. Not every company has such poor ones, but it won't make a difference if you add the layers I have suggested. *This IS a real latex foam pillow. I have owned enough to know what they smell and feel like. I bought a "medium". I would call it a firm "soft", and so it wasn't for me. Find the right firmness for your neck and sleep needs, and don't blame the damn company for your choice! These ARE the correct height, they smell normal, and the price is average (they're ALL overpriced)! *This does not seem like a completely latex product, but it is close enough that if it were actually medium firmness, I would have kept it.

Perfect size, perfect pillow.
Size: Queen (High Loft), Number of Items: 1
For me, This pillow is the be all and end all when it comes to comfort. I simply melt into luxurious sleep. I have had a bad neck since my early 20’s, so a pillow that doesn’t fit me, can break me. I have spent soooo much money on pillows trying to find The One. Foam is the only way to go in that regard. Another aspect about this pillow that is particularly important to me is how well it fits into my satin pillow case, with no room to slide around, or for the material to bunch up. I allowed the pillow to air on a chair for 24 hours before use, but am still getting a slight odor.
